Abstract
Frans Masereel’s The Idea and Passionate Journey, Lynd Ward’s Wild Pilgrimage, and Richard McGuire’s Here show the evolution of picture stories from wordless novels to graphic novels. As the form evolved, authors found inspiration from contemporary mediums of the time, adding elements, such as temporal markings and dialogue, that allowed for a nonlinear story structure. The incorporation of elements from new forms of media allowed authors of picture stories to blur barriers between low and high art.
