Abstract

In both Hemingway and Fitzgerald, alcohol is used to characterize people. Where Hemingway uses alcohol to construct a modern masculine identity shaped by tolerance and intoxication, Fitzgerald instead associates alcohol with performance, class anxiety, and emotional disintegration. In their writing the differences in each author's characterization of alcohol reveals much about their individual approaches to defining masculinity.
