Abstract

Ernest Hemingway’s A Farewell to Arms (1929) and F. Scott Fitzgerald’s Tender is the Night (1934) are rarely discussed in relation to each other, but trauma and war intersect in both novels symbolically through the characters and their relationships, making their romances serve as metaphors for warfare.
